Alberobello: Simple Guide to Puglia’s Trulli Town

Europe, Italy, Apulia, Alberobello

Alberobello is likely one of the most famous spots in Italy’s Puglia region. My statment has good reason. You see, Alberobello truly looks like it’s been lifted from the pages of a children’s storybook. Also, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site back in 1996. The town’s historic heart is filled with hundreds of trulli – distinctive white cottages topped with cone-shaped stone roofs.

Alberobello creates a magical atmosphere, beautiful place to simply wander and explore by foot.

This guide will give you a straightforward look at visiting Alberobello. How to cover the essential sights, the best views, ideas for places to stay and eat, plus some practical tips for your trip.

Helpful Tips for Your Alberobello Visit

  • Money Matters: The currency used is the Euro (€). Most shops and restaurants in Alberobello will take credit cards, but carrying some cash is useful for smaller buys or market stalls.
  • Handling the Crowds: Alberobello’s unique charm means it attracts a lot of visitors, especially during peak season. To enjoy the town when it’s a bit quieter and more peaceful, try to explore early in the morning or later in the afternoon/early evening, avoiding the main rush of day-trip groups.
  • What are Trulli?: Those unique, cone-roofed white buildings you see everywhere are called trulli (the singular is trullo). They are the defining feature of Alberobello.

When is the Ideal Time to Go to Alberobello?

  • Spring & Fall (April, May, September, October): These shoulder months often provide the sweet spot. You can expect pleasant temperatures for walking around, fewer crowds than in summer, and generally better prices for accommodation.
  • Summer (June – August): This period offers the highest chance of sunny days, perfect for photos. However, be ready for potentially intense summer heat (July and August can be very hot!), the busiest crowds, and peak season hotel rates.
  • Winter (November – March): It’s usually best to skip the winter months if possible, as the weather can be cold and damp, and some attractions or shops might have reduced hours.

How Long Should You Plan to Stay?

A Day or Longer.  Alberobello’s central location in Puglia makes it a good option if you’re looking for a base to explore the region for several days or even a week. The historic center is very walkable, with sights, shops, and restaurants close by. Staying overnight also lets you experience the magical atmosphere after the day-trippers have left.

From Alberobello, you can easily visit other fascinating towns like Locorotondo, Cisternino, Martina Franca, Monopoli, Polignano a Mare, or even take a longer trip to Matera.

However, if you’re based elsewhere, a full day in Alberobello is definitely enough time to see the main highlights, wander through the trulli districts, and soak up the unique ambiance.

Church of Saint Lucia Viewpoint (Belvedere Santa Lucia): For arguably the best panoramic view over the dense clusters of trulli rooftops, head to the terrace balcony next to the Church of Saint Lucia. It’s a popular spot, so you might have to wait a moment, but the photo opportunity is worth it.

Rione Aia Piccola: This is a charming, slightly quieter neighbourhood featuring around 400 trulli. Its winding lanes offer a lovely experience with fewer crowds compared to the main district.

Rione Monti: This is the larger and more famous trulli district, home to over 1,000 of the cone-roofed houses. It feels incredibly picturesque, like walking through a storybook village. It’s best enjoyed early morning or late afternoon to miss the biggest crowds. Many trulli here now house souvenir shops, cafes, and artisan workshops.

Trullo Siamese: Keep an eye out for this unique structure – the only trullo in town built with two connected cones. It now houses a small shop, and the steps outside are a popular photo spot.

Via Monte San Michele: While Alberobello has many charming streets, this is one of the main pedestrian lanes through Rione Monti. It’s lined with trulli converted into shops but can get very crowded by late morning.

Villa Comunale Belvedere Parco: A small public garden located near the main viewpoint, offering another pleasant perspective over the trulli landscape. It’s free to enter and a nice spot for a brief pause.

Hermanas Relais: If you’re looking for a more luxurious stay actually inside several connected trulli, this is a great option. It offers spacious accommodation with multiple bedrooms and bathrooms, a kitchen, living area, and a private patio/garden, right in the heart of town.

Romantic Trulli: A very popular choice for those wanting an authentic trullo experience. These are well-maintained, charming trulli known for their character and stone features. Excellent location for walking everywhere. (Book well in advance if possible!).

Suite21: A lovely trullo option situated just slightly outside the main pedestrian area, but still within easy walking distance of everything. It retains traditional Apulian character (stone alcoves, vaulted ceilings) and often includes a parking space, which is a big plus in Alberobello.

La Lira Focacceria: Perfect for a casual, quick, and tasty lunch. They serve traditional focaccia, puccia (a type of local sandwich bread), and pizza slices. Expect a queue during busy times.

Trattoria “Casa Amatulli” di Gianvito Amatulli: For a more traditional sit-down meal, this trattoria offers local pasta dishes and meat options. Being slightly outside the main tourist drag means it often attracts more locals.

The historic center (Centro Storico), particularly the Rione Monti and Rione Aia Piccola areas, is best explored entirely on foot. It’s mostly pedestrianized. The key is to find parking first and then walk.

  • Arriving by Train: Alberobello has its own train station. It’s located in the modern part of town, about a 5-10 minute walk from the start of the main trulli zone (Centro Storico).

There are several paid parking lots (parcheggi) and metered street parking spaces available around the edges of the Centro Storico.
