One thing you can count on in Palm Springs is sunshine! With more than 350 sunny days a year, there’s really no bad time to visit. However, depending on what you’re looking for, the seasons play a huge role in shaping your weekend in Palm Springs.

Spring (March-May): Hands down the best time to visit Palm Springs. I was there in late March, and the weather was perfect—warm but not scorching, with temperatures sitting comfortably in the 70s and 80s. It’s ideal for outdoor activities like hiking in Andreas Canyon in Palm Springs or lounging by the pool at The Saguaro.
Summer (June-August): Be prepared for temperatures well above 100°F. I wouldn’t recommend planning too many outdoor activities during the day unless you’re sticking to the pool or staying indoors.
Fall (September-November): This is another great time to visit, especially in early fall when the summer heat begins to taper off. Temperatures in the 80s and 90s are perfect for exploring Palm Springs’ iconic doors, including the famous pink door in Palm Springs, or enjoying a hike at Andreas Canyon.
Winter (December-February): If you’re looking for milder weather, winter is your go-to. During my first visit in February, the highs were in the 60s and 70s—perfect for outdoor dining and exploring the doors of Palm Springs or embarking on a Palm Springs door tour.

If you’re driving from San Diego, it’s a bit longer, but still manageable with a drive time from San Diego to Palm Springs of about 2.5 hours.

If you prefer to fly, Palm Springs International Airport (PSP) is super convenient and a mere 10-minute drive from downtown Palm Springs. One of the best things about Palm Springs is how easy it is to get around. If you’re staying downtown, you can explore on foot or even take a self-guided Palm Springs door tour. For those wanting to explore further, renting a car is your best bet, especially if you’re planning a day trip to Joshua Tree from Palm Springs or other nearby destinations.

Rideshare apps like Uber and Lyft are also widely available, making it easy to enjoy your weekend at Palm Springs without the hassle of driving everywhere.

What to Pack for a Palm Springs Weekend Getaway

I started my door tour in Palm Springs with this legendary Palm Springs pink door house, and trust me, it lives up to the hype. Andreas Canyon Trail in Indian Canyons

After the door tour, head over to Andreas Canyon in Palm Springs, located in the stunning Indian Canyons. This relatively easy 1-mile loop offers plenty of shade from towering palm trees and the sound of a bubbling creek, making it feel like an oasis in the desert. Hiking the Andreas Canyon Trail in Palm Springs early in the morning is magical, with the sun filtering through the palm fronds and casting beautiful shadows on the canyon walls.

Visit the Cabazon Dinosaurs

One of the quirkiest and most fun stops during your Palm Springs weekend trip is a visit to the Cabazon Dinosaurs, just a short 20-minute drive from Palm Springs. If you’re lucky enough to visit Palm Springs between February and May, you’ll have the opportunity to experience DesertX, an outdoor art exhibition that places modern art installations across the desert landscape. It’s an incredible addition to your Palm Springs itinerary, blending the natural beauty of the desert with thought-provoking works of art. During my trip, I found the juxtaposition of art and desert to be one of the most memorable parts of my weekend in Palm Springs. Make sure to add this to your must-do list if you’re visiting during the exhibit dates!

Whether you’re staying at a hotel with an epic pool or booking a day pass, lounging by the pool is an essential part of the Palm Springs experience. One of my favorite spots was The Saguaro, known for its colorful vibe and laid-back atmosphere. One of the most iconic sights in the area is the famous Palm Springs Windmills. This historic estate, once the winter retreat of the Annenberg family, offers beautifully maintained gardens and fascinating historical tours. The street is lined with unique boutiques, art galleries, and sidewalk cafes that make for a perfect day of exploring. It’s also home to the Palm Springs Walk of Stars, celebrating the celebrities who contributed to the area’s culture and history. In the evenings, the street comes alive with music and lights, creating a fun and lively atmosphere to cap off your day. I rented a car and had a fantastic time. I used Skyscanner to rent the vehicle, and it was affordable.

Take a Day Trip to Joshua Tree

No weekend getaway to Palm Springs is complete without a day trip to Joshua Tree. Just under an hour’s drive from Palm Springs, Joshua Tree National Park is a stunning natural wonder that offers otherworldly landscapes, incredible hikes, and the iconic Joshua Trees. During my visit, I spent the morning hiking Skull Rock and exploring the Cholla Cactus Garden—both must-sees if you’re short on time. If you’re lucky, you can catch the breathtaking sunset over the park, making it a perfect end to your Palm Springs weekend trip.

Drive Down to Salvation Mountain

If you’re in the mood for something off the beaten path, a drive to Salvation Mountain is well worth the effort. Located about 1.5 hours from Palm Springs, this vibrant, folk-art masterpiece is an explosion of color in the middle of the desert. It’s one of the most unique day trips from Palm Springs, and its quirky, photogenic atmosphere is something you won’t want to miss. For those with a love of art and adventure, Salvation Mountain adds a memorable and surreal element to any weekend in Palm Springs.

Breakfast/Brunch

If you’re spending a weekend in Palm Springs, you can’t miss out on the fantastic brunch spots. Cheeky’s is a must-visit for its famous bacon flights and rotating menu—perfect for kicking off your morning before heading out for a Palm Springs door tour.

For a chic and Instagrammable experience, head to The Pink Cabana. The stylish interiors and delicious brunch offerings make it a great spot to relax and fuel up for a day of exploring.

Lunch/Dinner

When it comes to lunch and dinner, Palm Springs offers a mix of alfresco dining and fresh, flavorful options. Birba is a great spot for Italian food, with its twinkling lights and outdoor seating setting the perfect mood. If you’re in the mood for something unique, Sandfish Sushi & Whiskey offers an inventive pairing of sushi and whiskey that’s sure to make your weekend in Palm Springs even more memorable.

Coffee and Snacks

In between exploring and relaxing during your Palm Springs weekend getaway, make sure to grab a treat or a cup of coffee. Great Shakes is a perfect stop for anyone with a sweet tooth—their milkshakes are next-level, and the mini donut on top is an adorable bonus.

Snacks

For coffee, Ernest Coffee is a cozy spot offering strong brews that will fuel your adventures, whether you’re heading out on a Palm Springs door tour or just relaxing by the pool.

Where to Stay in Palm Springs

Choosing the right place to stay in Palm Springs is a big part of the experience, and luckily, there’s something for every budget. I selected my hotel through Skyscanner and got an excellent deal. Highly recommended.

Budget-Friendly

Skylark Hotel: For a budget-friendly option, I highly recommend Skylark Hotel. It’s got that retro Palm Springs vibe, with spacious rooms and a great pool area. Plus, they offer complimentary breakfast, which is always a bonus. I found it perfect for relaxing by the pool in the afternoons, and the location made it easy to explore the city.

Mid-Range

The Saguaro: If you’re looking for something mid-range and seriously Instagrammable, The Saguaro is where it’s at. The bright colors and fun design make it one of Palm Springs’ most iconic hotels, and the lively pool scene is a big draw. I stayed here for a few nights, and the atmosphere was perfect—casual, fun, and the pool was the place to be during the day. Plus, you’ve got El Jefe right on-site, so you don’t have to go far for amazing tacos.

Luxury

The Parker: If luxury is what you’re after, The Parker is the place to be. It’s famous for its chic design, lush grounds, and impeccable service. From the moment I walked in, I felt like I’d stepped into an exclusive world of relaxation and style. The property is huge, with several pools, a lemonade stand, and beautiful spots to unwind. My stay here felt like a true getaway from the real world.
Korakia Pensione: For something a little more intimate and romantic, I fell in love with Korakia Pensione. It’s a Mediterranean-style retreat, and staying here felt like being transported to another time and place. The serene atmosphere, candlelit pathways, and cozy rooms make it perfect for couples. I spent my mornings enjoying breakfast in the courtyard, soaking in the tranquil vibes before heading out to explore the city.
